Hard hitting Queen’s Park batsman Tion Webster smashed the highest score in the history of 50 overs cricket in Trinidad on Thursday night at the National Cricket Centre (NCC) in Couva against PowerGen Sports Club.
Webster scored 172 and Daron Cruickshank made 108, as Queen’s Park demolished the PowerGen bowling to record a massive 365 for four off 50 overs in the semi-finals of the TTCB Premiership. PowerGen after the pounding replied with only 133/9 of 27.1 overs to lose the game by 232 runs. Queen’s Park now moves on to the finals tomorrow at the National Cricket Centre (NCC) to play rivals Merryboys.
Webster who recently made the grade to the national team, playing for the T&T Red Force, opened the batting and got Queen’s Park off to a flyer. He and Jeremy Solozano posted 49 runs in the first seven overs and when Solozano left for 19, PowerGen came back into contest. They collected the wickets of skipper Justin Guillen for 10 and Akeal Hosein for 11. Webster was still beating ball but Queen’s Park would soon slip to 145 for four, with Yannic Carriah falling for 30.
At this point the right hander was joined by another power-hitter in the form of Daron Cruicshank and the PowerGen fieldsmen were retrieving balls regularly from beyond the boundary. The two added 220 runs from 23.2 overs to take Queen’s Park to their emphatic score. Webster scored 172 from 132 balls with 15 fours and seven sixes. Cruickshank who has been consistent this season for the Parkites, knocked 108 of 74 balls with six fours and seven sixes.
When PowerGen took to the crease, they were chasing victory at a required rate of 7.32 runs per over. They lost wickets at regular intervals and could not forge any meaningful partnerships to challenge the huge score. Even West Indies batsman Jason Mohammed was not on sound and left the park without scoring. The man doing the damage for Queen’s Park was Barbadian Javon Searles who grabbed 5/23. There were two wickets apiece for Khary Pierre and Carriah.
