Merryboys Cricket Club was force to share the inaugural Tobago Cricket Association (TCA) Franchise title, after rain washed out their finals against YML&THR United at Shaw Park in Tobago on Saturday night.
The two teams ended up sharing the first prize of $40,000 that was on offer. Merryboys were favourites to win the title, after winning their two matches in the tournament leading up to the finals. They defeated First Citizens Clarke Road United and YML&THR in the prelims. Having topped the standings, they were drawn to meet second place YML&THR. However constant rain bowled out the finals and bringing the tournament to a watery end.
The tournament which created great interest in the Sister Isle was sponsored by the Office of the Prime Minister. Tobago East MP, Ayanna Webster-Roy speaking about the event said :“Through initiatives like these, we are hoping to reach as many Tobagonians as possible so that they can understand that the Office of the Prime Minister is here as an agency working for the development of all of Tobago.
President of Merryboys cricket club Patrick Rampersad said he was happy that his team reached the finals. “The boys did well and Merryboys ended a very good season with this performance in Tobago. I did not make the run across for the tournament but the guys under manager Sebastien Edwards the boys did well. We would have liked to take away the title alone but rain came and we had no control of that. Having said that we enjoyed a very good season, winning the domestic T20 title and coming second in the Premiership and the 50 overs competitions.”
