SOUTH Zone continued to stamp their dominance on national cricket when their Under-17s
defeated their North counterparts in a trial match to select the Trinidad and Tobago squad for
the upcoming regional tournament.
“Man-of- the-Match” Mbeki Joseph stroked a 38-ball 54 with seven fours and a six, and Tariq
Mohammed made 42 off just 27 balls with eight boundaries as South raced to 175 for seven in
just 24.1 overs of the 50-Over clash.
Earlier, North, taking first strike on Saturday, were dismissed for 173 in 39.1 overs in the day-
night fixture at the National Cricket Centre in Balmain, Couva with opening batsman Leonardo
Julien top-scoring with a well-played 72.
Julien hit five boundaries and two maximums off 77 balls and got good support from his
namesake Leonardo Francis who contributed 24. Both play for the East Zone, whose
stranglehold on the inter zone competition was broken by South this season.
South were guilty of giving away needless extras which totalled 24, while Michael Ambard made
20 to shore up the North batting effort. The most successful bowler for the winners was Jayden
Seales who took three wickets for 37 runs in nine overs, while Nicholas Ali claimed two for 21 in
Also making their presence felt in the bowling department were Avinash Mahabirsingh, Matthew
Patrick, Navir Maharaj and Faizal Mangera who all snapped up a wicket apiece to ensure that
North did not accumulate a sizeable target.
In the end, the North bowlers paid the penalty despite their best efforts as Joseph and fellow-
opener Mohammed posted a solid winning foundation of 91 runs for the first wicket in just eight
overs to ensure South of additional silverware in the 2017 season.
North Zone’s bowling was led by Sameer Ali who returned figures of three for 31 in six excellent
overs, while Giovani Letren, Sachin Soodeen, and Adam Reyes grabbed one each.
